KNX SmartHome with Home Assistant: planning

What KNX is

KNX is an open, manufacturer-independent bus protocol for building automation — not a proprietary system that the manufacturer can discontinue at short notice. SIS Automation plans and installs KNX systems for private households and commercial buildings in Saarland and in the Saar-Lor-Lux tri-border region: from the first circuit planning to the fully parameterised system.

Planning with ETS5 and ETS6

Planning and programming are done with the ETS5 or ETS6 software — the only official configuration tool for KNX projects. Every device, every group address, every scene is engineered and documented there. This project file stays with the customer: another KNX specialist can extend or change the system later — without manufacturer lock-in.

Yes — provided we receive the ETS project file or can re-engineer it. Because KNX is an open standard, we are not tied to the original installer.

What is automated

Lighting and DALI. Single-room control, scene control, presence detection — or the integration of DALI luminaire groups for fine-grained dimming control.

Shading. Blinds, raffstores and awnings are controlled by weather and by time.

Heating and energy management. Room-by-room temperature control via KNX actuators and thermostats. In combination with presence detectors or window contacts, heating stops when nobody is there or a window is open — without manual intervention.

Security and access control. Alarm zone, door status, motion detectors — as integrated KNX logic or in combination with an external alarm panel.

Home Assistant as an open hub

In parallel with or in addition to KNX, we use Home Assistant as a visualisation and automation hub. Home Assistant runs locally on your own hardware, without a cloud connection — your home data does not leave the building. Home Assistant runs entirely locally. Remote access is optional and can be realised through your own VPN tunnel — without a third-party cloud service.

New builds and renovations

In a new build we support the project from the wiring-diagram phase onward. In a renovation, existing electrical installations can be retrofitted step by step with KNX actuators without opening up all the walls. The project duration depends on scope and level of expansion.

Costs

The costs depend heavily on building size, mix of trades and level of equipment. After a free initial consultation we give a reliable estimate — no shots in the dark.

Frequently asked questions

What does a KNX project cost?
The costs depend heavily on building size, mix of trades and level of equipment. After a free initial consultation we give a reliable estimate — no shots in the dark.
Can I extend an existing KNX system that another company installed?
Yes — provided we receive the ETS project file or can re-engineer it. Because KNX is an open standard, we are not tied to the original installer.
Does Home Assistant also work without internet?
Home Assistant runs entirely locally. Remote access is optional and can be realised through your own VPN tunnel — without a third-party cloud service.
